Creating a Living Room Layout Fast And Efficiently
If you are like me you are probably never happy with how your living room looks. You’ve probably looked at its layout and imagined a number of different ways it can be redone, and you don’t want to keep repeating the same old tired layout with only new furniture pieces. So lets talk about a simple method to create a efficient layout for your living room.

Before we begin lets consider a few points, a living room is a transition space. What this means is that it is the gateway to the rest of your house. Other rooms, the bedrooms, dinning rooms, kitchen etc. are all accessed through this room. That is why you always want a sufficient amount of circulation space to exist, to allow family members to get through the house.

Here are some simple steps that you can follow to create an efficient layout for your future living room:

    A) Take a plane white paper. A4 size is also an option.

    B) Draw a sketch plan of your living room on this paper. While drawing this plan it is important to show the following things in it:

    1) Entrance door

    2) Entrance doors to other rooms

    3) Window positions

    4) Minor column projections (if any)

    5) Swing of the doors (inside or outside the living room)

    6) Presence of staircase

    7) Fireplace (if any)

    C) Take a pencil and draw lines starting from your front door to all of the other doors and window positions. These lines are the natural travel lines for any person using the living room. If the room were to be empty, without any furniture, these lines show how any person would get to all of the other points in the living room.

    D) Now begin placing any type of furniture you can imagine or your budget will allow.

When placing these pieced you an easily see were the furniture will obstruct the pencil lines that have been drawn in step C. But this is ok for now. Try to make as many combinations as possible. Think out of the box, make it a goal to try something different.

If you can come up with at least 10 layouts for your living room you will have a good grasp on what can be done. Make sure to also try to keep in mind future pieces that may replace existing furniture.

Your goal here obviously is to keep you movement lines as unobstructed as possible. We are trying to keep it as efficient as possible for anybody traveling through this room.

After this short exercise you will have probably 5 different layouts on paper with. Select the one in which you see the following points of interest.

    a)Travel line lengths are shortest.

b)Travel lines do not pass trough the furniture.

Apart from the efficiency there is another factor called as visual balance while designing a furniture layout. Finally does it look good to YOU. Are you comfortable with the final layout. The visual balance is achieved by making the most use of all walls of the living room with decorating elements such as paintings, color schemes, etc.

So if you follow a system from the beginning you will be definitely be able to create a beautiful living room in the shortest possible time. I hope this article has helped you to find more creative ways of doing this job more efficiently.

Solid State Drives (SSD) And The Benifits They Bring To Netbooks
No doubt netbooks have grown in popularity, and one of the great results of this popularity is how it has made Solid State Drive (SSD) much more popular. In the past, Hard Disk Drive (HDD) ruled the hard drives scene. But what is a SSD and what are some of the benefits in not only netbooks but laptops, and other portable devices?

The term originally encompassed electronics like a transistor radio, which use semiconductors instead of vacuum tubes. When you talk about SSD, it only means that the storage medium is built entirely on semiconductors rather than a magnetic media like the hard drive.

    Flash SSD vs. Regular SSD

Flash drives, or you may know it as a thumb drive, can be plugged into a PC’s USB port and is similar to regular SSD in that both use non-volatile memory chips that allow them to retain stored data even when that have no power.

They differ in the form of storage capacity. A flash drive in meant to be an external device that should be plugged into a USB port. A regular SSD usually is inside of a netbook or computer case, either in the place of a regular HDD or in conjunction with a HDD.

On the surface a SDD looks no different from a traditional hard drive. A SSD can come in all of the same sizes (1.8”, 2.5” or 3.5”) and also uses either ATA or SATA interfaces. So the question arises, why use SSD?

    Why Use an SSD?

SSD definitely has many advantages over a regular HDD, a lot of this has to do with the fact that a SSD has no actual moving parts. While a HDD would have a motor to spin the magnetic platters and the drive heads, on a SSD the storage is handled by flash memory chips. Because of this advantage a SSD uses less power, can usually boot data up to 20% faster, and are more reliable that regular HDD.

Since SSD draws less power netbooks that use them tend to have a longer battery life, and netbooks become A LOT more shock proof. Regular HDD platters are very fragile and sensitive, even a light fall while on can render a drive useless. Since all of the data on a SSD is stored in data memory chips, there are less moving parts to be damaged in a fall.

How To Select a Cheap Netbook or Lightest Netbook
A netbook computer can be described as smaller, compact, low-cost and extremely mobile laptop computer nevertheless it has got the processing power that is not as much as a full-sized laptop. However, it is suitable enough for general computing, word processing, running a web browser and connecting to the Internet wirelessly. Netbooks are small in size, usually with a 10-inch screen, but some displays can be slightly smaller or larger. Their weight is about 2.5 pounds, but this not the lightest netbook, and they sell for well under $500 these days, and finding a cheap netbook under 100 is not hard. Most netbooks come with Intel Atom processor and at least 1 GB of RAM.

With the ever growing demand for the netbook many companies are designing more and more netbook models released into the world market. So, it is not easy to make a right choice of buying a good netbook for buyers. For anyone looking to buy a netbook, here are some important netbook features to consider:

    Screen size and display resolution
Netbooks generally come with a screen size which ranges from 7 to 12 inches. That's a big difference from the average 15 inches on a full-sized laptop. In order to decide which screen size is good enough for you, you should try to run your favorite programs and view your favorite websites on a variety of different sized screens.

    Keyboard and touchpad
A keyboard of netbooks is usually smaller than a standard keyboard of full size laptops and range from 88-93% of the full-size keyboards. The keyboard layout of netbook is quite similar to the full size keyboard but key buttons on netbooks are smaller and closer.

Touchpad is one of features to consider. At present, a wide variety of touchpad have been developed and specially designed to offer a more comfortable experience during prolonged use.

    Operating system (OS)
Netbooks are available for Linux and Windows operating systems and new netbooks have moved to Windows 7 Starter, which is a lighter version of Windows 7 to help with load time and overall performance. As we all know about windows because that most people are familiar with the Windows layout as they have been using it for several years on their home and office computers.

    Processor
Intel Atom is the most common processor available for the netbooks (most of them run on the Intel Atom N or Z Series). Here you should go for the latest technologies because they are available with more efficiency and try not to buy an old netbook because you can face problem of speed and efficiency.

The latest Atom processor on netbooks for 2010 is Intel Atom N450 Processor (1.66 GHz). Most netbooks launched into the markets last year were Intel Atom N270 or N280 which are being replaced by new Intel Atom N450. We can notice that all processors on netbooks are slower than the standard processor on laptops, which is about 2.1 GHz. This means that a netbook will be slower when running heavier programs. So, you shouldn't use a netbook for heavy processing, such as photo/video editing and gaming. However, netbooks are perfect for light processes like web surfing, email, and word processing.

    Battery Life
Old notebook batteries usually come with 3-cell (less than 30 Wh) units but for new netbooks, they have upped their standard batteries to 6-cell units which can get you unplugged for about 6-9 hours while 3-cell systems usually get between 1 and 3 hours of endurance. If your job or work require traveling then you should look for the 6-cell option that can get you unplugged for about 6-9 hours on a single charge. These are little costly than 3-cell battery netbooks but can be very useful if your activities involve overseas travel or all-day classes. And will not contribute to a finding the lightest netbook.

After Intel has unveiled new Atom N450 processor, new netbooks can consume less power approximately 20% over previous netbook generation (e.g. Intel Atom N270, N280). New latest netbooks are coming with battery life of 10-14 hours such as models Asus Eee PC 1005PE-P, Asus Eee PC 100P, Acer A0532h and Toshiba Mini NB305-N410 (10-inch screen).

    Memory (RAM)
Most of netbooks come with 1GB and are up to 2GB. It depends on the kinds of operating system used in netbooks (1GB for Windows XP and 2GB for Windows 7 or Window Vista). However, please make sure you have at least 1GB to keep things running smoothly.

    Storage capacity
There are 2 types of hard drives; solid-state drives (SSDs) and spinning hard disk drives (HDDs). The SSDs are faster and more durable than HDDs and consume less power and weigh less. The storage capacity of SSDs is not enough for netbooks because of the high price. The early model Eee PCs have only 4GB or 8GB SSD, and the newer model Eee PC 1000 uses a 40GB SSD. Most netbooks are equipped with the HDDs which have the storage capacity from 60GB to 320GB. Look for a hard drive that has a capacity of at least 160GB and a rotational speed of 5,400 rpm.

Additionally, netbooks generally come with a built-in web cam, Wi-Fi, card reader, and USB ports. Some even have extra features such as Bluetooth, 3G, GPS, etc. Reliable brands of netbooks that you can choose from are: Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Samsung, Toshiba etc. Using these brands as a guide, you can choose the models that are the lightest and are cheap netbook.

In conclusion, we suggest at a minimum, an Intel Atom N450 Processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB or larger hard drive, 8 hours long battery life and Windows 7 Starter with Bluetooth as a preferred option for tethering a smart phone for mobile broadband access.

Developing iPhone Apps on Windows, with the iPhone 4 in mind
The Apple iPhone 4 is definitely an incredible gadget that invites creativity. No doubt you've said to yourself: 'I wish I could do this on my iphone 4.'

Using the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK), programmers can make there ideas reality - even if you yourself don't know the difference between a C-pointer and a SQLite database.

More than 200 iPhone application projects have already been posted on Elance.com. Check out these tips in this article to get your project kick-started.

We focus on the development of applications for the Apple iPhone, and we asked Nick Dalton, iPhone SDK specialist, to give Elance buyers a few tips on how to scope and post an iPhone Application project. Here’s what he had to say:

The iPhone is an amazing device that invites creativity. If you’re an iPhone owner I’m sure you’ve said to yourself: ‘I wish I could do that on my iPhone, or I have a great idea for an iPhone application’.

    Study the Masters
Apple has already spent a lot of time thinking about how to present information and build interactive applications on the iPhone. The applications that come with the iPhone are the results of this research. Study them in great detail and try to apply as many of the user interface metaphors as possible to your application.

Not only will Apple be flattered if you imitate the user interface in their applications, but they actually mandate it to a great level of detail as described in their Human Interface Guidelines.

    Dream in Color Screens
Most applications for the iPhone will be very visual. Therefore it makes sense to provide your requirements as screen images or sketches. You don’t have to be a graphics artist to do this effectively. An iPhone programmer is looking for the following information:
    - The type of layout each screen should have

    - The buttons on the screens

    - The actions associated with each button
The exact shape and format of your screen sketches is secondary. As long as they are readable, it’s a great way to communicate your application design to a programmer.

    Be Realistic About Your Budget
Look at other iPhone projects posted on Elance to get a sense for the bid amounts on these projects. Read the descriptions of these projects to see if they seem to be larger or smaller projects than what you have in mind. If you set your budget to under $500 for something that is realistically going to take a programmer two months to implement, you are not likely to attract many bidders.

From a programming perspective, some things are easy to do on the iPhone 4, while other seemingly simple things are very time consuming. For example the beautiful cover-flow animation used in the music application on the iPhone should be simple to use in other applications. Unfortunately you can’t. If you want this animation within your application it will have to be written from scratch, probably costing a one month of work.

If you talk to an approved iPhone developer early in your application design process you can learn how to get most out of your budget by avoiding the things that are really difficult to do on the iPhone.

    Don’t Be Too Original
iPhone users already know how to do certain tasks on their phones by convention. For example, if you tap an item in a list that has a > icon next to it, you expect to be taken to another screen with more information about that item. If your application needs similar functionality, don’t be creative and come up with a new way to solve the same problem. Use the conventions already established by Apple.

New conventions are difficult to establish especially with the touch interface because there is no way to discover how your application works on the iPhone. Unlike a website where you can hover with the mouse pointer over areas that look like you can interact with them and a tool tip or the status bar will reveal some clues to you.

    Know Your Limitations
The current version of the iPhone SDK, which is used to write applications for the iPhone, has many restrictions and limitations. Some of them are common sense, e.g. you can’t send text messages from an application. Imagine an application that sends out thousands of text messages without your knowledge, who is going to pay the phone bill for that?

Other restrictions are maddening: applications cannot access the log of phone calls, or interact in any way with the calendar or the music stored on the iPhone.

To Apple’s credit, the iPhone SDK is an amazing piece of software especially given that it was publicly released as a Beta just three months ago. Some of the shortcomings listed above will likely be addressed in future releases of the SDK.

As a buyer with an idea for an iPhone application, you should educate yourself about these limitations before you spend too much time designing an application that is impossible to implement. Talk to a developer or company that specializes in iPhone development and they can help you get on the right track from the start.
